SECTION OF DEFENCE FORCES DENTAL SERVICES
2009 CONFERENCE REPORT
|
The FDI Section of Defence Forces Dental Services (SDFDS) 2009 annual conference
was hosted by the Armed Forces Medical Service Singapore at the main FDI congress
site Suntec Convention Center in Singapore.
The conference was organised around the theme “Dental Healthcare for the next generation
Armed Forces”, which is within the SDFDS focus, “to exchange ideas, innovations,
concepts and experiences within the areas for Defence Dental Services”. Our singaporian
hosts had arranged an excellent military dental programme that took place over two
days including two scientific meetings and additional visits to the Armed Forces
Medical Headquarters and Heritage Museum.
The scientific programme was presented over 1 and ½ days with presentations by military
speakers from Australia, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia,
Netherlands, Turkey, UK and the USA. Topics covered were the SDFDS’s areas of common
interest: (1) Field dentistry, which includes equipment and deployments; (2) Forensic
dentistry – mass disaster victim identification; (3) Maritime and aviation dentistry,
including barodontalgia; (4) Digital and tele-dentistry; (5) Management of dental
service delivery, which includes, but is not limited to performance assessment and
improvement, readiness and dental management programmes; (6) Oral and Maxillofacial
Treatment of polytraumatised soldiers during combat missions and last but not the
least, (7) Clinical related topics.
A new SDFDS Executive has been elected, Major General Professor Yimin Zhao from
the 4th Military Mecical University in Xi´an China, who organised and hosted the
2006 event, is the new chairman, some additional data clarification concerning the
other positions still has to be processed.
The programme also included a Mess Reception and a Host Nation Dinner at military
messes of the Singapore Armed Forces.
Military colleagues from next year congress site Brazil did not attend but I got
the opportunity to talk about next year`s SDFDS congress with the new FDI President,
who was well informed about our military group.
The Past Executive Committee and all SDFDS members would again like to express their
sincere thanks for help and support, especially by Laurence Jocaille, of the FDI
World Dental Federation`s HQ, who made this highly professional and well organised
military programme possible. Our sincere thanks and appreciation are expressed towards
our hosts, the Local FDI and SDFDS Organising Committee, the Chief of Singapore
Armed Forces Medical Corps – Brigadier General Dr. Benjamin Seet and Colonel Dr.
Tan Peng Hui, a senior dental officer and Commander SAF Military Medicine Institute
and last but not least to all their superiors who made that 2009 conference possible.

Programme Welcome Note: SDFDS 2009
|
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Chairman SDFDS and the Executive Committee I am happy to announce
our 2009 Military Conference in Singapore.
We are all witnessing difficult conditions like the financial crisis and swine influenza
which don´t make preparations easier for our hosting Singaporean colleagues.
After military conferences off from the main FDI congress site in 2006 (Xi´an, China
/ Shenzen) and 2008 in Stockholm, not to forget a cancellation of the Dubai meeting
in 2007, we are "on site" again in Singapore.
We all should not forget that we – as the military representatives - are as well
representing a very long tradition within the FDI. Since foundation in 1903 the
military dentists have an own group under the FDI umbrella which was first named
Committee on Defence Dental Services (CDFDS) and renamed Section on Defence Forces
Dental Services (SDFDS) some years ago.
We all have to be aware however that people change not only within our group. In
former times chief executive directors of FDI have had a strong liaison with us
military people, like Olof Carlsson and J.T. Barnard – they were one´s of us, made
their way to highest positions within FDI and always didn´t forget about their origin
and steady and helpful communication with us.
Nowadays we can be sure that civilian colleagues know about our existence but within
FDI I am convinced that we have to demonstrate our presence again. Therefore I am
asking You to register for the main FDI congress and to show up in Your service
dress, understanding that many of us get the permission and funding to do so. You
should as well communicate with the respective representatives of Your national
dental association – we have to emphasize again that we are an integral part/group
of FDI.
We will keep You informed – please feel free to contact us if You have any further
questions!
Looking forward meeting you in Singapore
Yours

Welcome Message
|
Welcome to Singapore It gives me great pleasure to invite you to the SDFDS 2009
in Singapore from 30 Aug - 2 Sep 09.
Dental Healthcare for the Next Generation Armed Forces is the main theme of SDFDS
2009. Military dentistry faces a longstanding foe. Our soldiers will know toothache
for as long as they have teeth. The best defence against it is prevention and knowledge.
SDFDS is a forum to share that knowledge in military dentistry.
SDFDS 2009 will be held at the
Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre, the
same venue as the FDI World Dental Congress 2009. We recommend that you stay in
the nearby Pan Pacific Hotel, where 100 rooms have been reserved for military delegate
until 31 July 09. Book your room online at
here and enjoy the same special rates offered
to FDI participants.
There is plenty to see in Singapore; for example, the iconic Esplanade Theatre and
the famous Raffles Hotel. Complete the experience with a stroll through the fashion
street of Orchard Rd. Singapore also abounds with military history. Being a British
naval base in World War II, tours of the underground command centre of the British
Malaya Command and the huge 15-inch gun battery are recommended.
If you are planning on going to an overseas conference, choose SDFDS Brazil 2010.
Here, you will educate yourself of dentistry, experience Asian hospitality and meet
old friends. Hope to see you in August!
